Vector Landscapes
For this project we will design two different landscapes, one natural on urban. Think about how you might apply one of the color schemes you learned to each landscape. One landscape will also be at night and one during the day, so also consider how your chosen color scheme will reflect the time of day (we can call sunset/rise still day time), and I’ll show you how to apply gradients in Illustrator, how to build more complex shapes from simple ones, and how to create a sense of depth so your landscape doesn't look too flat.
I was inspired to do this project by the illustrated desktop backgrounds for the new Apple OS (Big Sur, 2021) which are dynamic i.e. they change from day to night to reflect the actual time of day where you live. You can see 4 examples of this below one each at day and night. The style in which these were made is unmistakably vector graphic! Likely made in Adobe Illustrator (the indisbuted king of vector graphic software) or something similar.
Here is the grading rubric with requirements for this project.

In addition I've included some other vector landscapes for added inspiration (thank you Olivia Sanford). Some of these (the first 5 I believe) were done for an ad campaign for REI by artist Brian Edward Miller, see more of his work here. He lives here in Broomfield, CO where I happened to graduate from high school. I like how he adds textures to simulate the actual texture of some of the features in his landscapes like rocks, leaves, or tree bark etc.
Here are some similar styled vector landscapes that were hanging just outside the bathroom above the drinking fountain in our high school. These are promoting outreach through Mind Springs, a mental health center here in Glenwood. The last image is unrelated, but from a sweatshirt I saw in a magazine. I like how the mountains are made to look 3D with a dark side and a light side, try this effect in your own landscape whether on mountains or something else!
